Summary Of The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo

The plot of ‘The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo’ follows the life story of  Evelyn Elena Herrera. We see Evelyn navigate her life as she escapes Hell’s Kitchen and rises high as a Hollywood star. Evelyn believes in practicality and refuses to let go of any opportunity. When she sees an opportunity for a  ticket to Hollywood, she marries Ernie Diaz to grab it. When she sees an opportunity to land a deal with the Sunset Studio, she allows Ari Sullivan to roam his hands around her body. She glides through scandals, movies, red carpets, and glamour, inebriated with success.

She would do anything to sustain the life, she so carefully build. She would let Don Adler hit her to sustain it, she would perform an erotic scene, she would go on fake dates, anything but she would not let the world take away what she build, would not let the world push her back into Hell’s Kitchen. Evelyn too is human though, she had her one great love; Celia St. James. A talented actress with cute freckles. She is virtuous, unlike Evelyn. Over the life span, Evelyn and Celia make up and break up a lot of times. But the seemingly heterosexual Evelyn only ever truly loved Celia.

Monique is an unknown writer and is startled to get the offer of writing the biography of Evelyn Hugo. At the end of the process, Evelyn reveals a shocking secret to Monique. Monique could never conclude what kind of human Evelyn Hugo was, but she could conclude that there was no way one could resist Evelyn Hugo. She was made for the center light, Born a star.

The Seven Husband Of Evelyn Hugo Review

General Features

  • The chapters are small.
  • Readability is easy.
  • The plot is well-paced not too fast or slow.
  • Characters are complex & interesting.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo can be described as a moving book. I have always had a despicable attitude toward the filmmaking industry. Thinking of them as just money-hoggers, and opportunists, with zero regard for virtues. This book was able to shatter my beliefs and give them a new shape. Evelyn wasn’t a good person but what she did was justifiable. No one wishes to stay in Hell’s Kitchen, and Evelyn possessed the guts to challenge her circumstances.

Evelyn was brimming with complexities, and faults which made her more human. Taylor Jenkins Reid developed an amazingly strong and humane female lead who could solo everyone and knew her worth. Anyone who adores strong female leads will love this book. At first, I couldn’t decide whether I liked Evelyn or hated her. Everything she did went against my belief system, challenging it at every step. But when I reached the last page, I was sure I was a whole new person.

When life gives you opportunities, just grab them. No one’s all white or black, we’re all gray. Love wholeheartedly like Evelyn loved Celia. And did my attitude towards the filmmaking industry changed, Yes it did. Evelyn did some bad things but she too was human. Reading the story of someone so selfish yet loving was a fun journey. I would recommend the book to everyone, especially those with the “the-world-is-all-too-good” attitude like me.  One thing I learned from Evelyn Hugo was, when life gives you opportunities, Grab them, Do whatever it takes.
