Short Summary

The Silent Patient follows the narrative of Alicia Berenson. Alicia is a professional painter married to Gabriel Berenson, who is a fashion photographer. They had been married for seven years and seemed happy. On August 25th, Alicia shoots her husband five times in the face, after which she never speaks again. Alicia’s case makes headlines—a brutal murder and a silent criminal. Theo Faber, a psychotherapist, is fascinated by Alicia’s case.

He is intrigued by the mystery behind Alicia’s silence. He decides to work at ‘The Grove’, where Alicia is admitted. As he starts investigating her case, deception, lies, and frauds come to light, changing the narrative of the story. Alicia still refuses to speak, and circumstances make the situation even more difficult. But Theo is fixated on finding the truth. He starts interrogating Alicia’s acquaintances, friends, and family. Theo breaks down every little clue, habit, and instance to decipher Alicia’s mental state.  When the truth emerges, will he accept it? Is he a heroic character or just another messed-up one? A gripping novel that’ll keep you on the edge and leave you guessing.

The Silent Patient Review

‘The Silent Patient’ is a great psychological thriller. The pacing of the story is fast. The language is easy, and all elements are interconnected properly. There is a dual point of view, which gives more insights. The characters have depth and complexity. The ending is not at all predictable. There are many twists and turns, making the story interesting. The darker elements of the human psyche are explored. The book shows the nasty effects of a bad childhood.

It shows how different people deal with intense emotions, some in a healthy way and some in an unhealthy way. The story is more about two damaged and obsessive individuals. The murder is the central conflict of the story, but the plot is more about the cause-and-effect relationship of trauma. The narrative is weaved together well, as there are no plot holes or filler chapters. The beginning might not be that gripping, but as the story progresses, it keeps getting interesting.

There is a time overlap, which might confuse some readers. The story is not suitable for people who are triggered by trauma, violence, and gore. The final plot twists will leave the reader gaping. Usually the climax twists are somewhat predictable, but ‘The Silent Patient’ is everything but predictable. Expect the unexpected. The ending is a bit vague, but the central conflict is resolved.

The Silent Patient is suitable for psychological thriller readers, crime thriller readers, readers interested in dark aspects of the human psyche, readers looking for unpredictable and fast-paced stories, readers interested in psychology, and readers looking for an original and unique thriller story. The Silent Patient is not suitable for people who are triggered by violence, trauma, gore, manipulation, or abuse.

Conclusively, ‘The Silent Patient’ is an unnerving thriller book. It is original, suspenseful, and unforgettable. The readability is easy. The pacing of the book is perfect. The characters have depth and realism about them. The overall story is weaved together. This is an utterly amazing thriller book.

Overall Rating

The Silent Patient is the third thriller book I read. The other two being ‘Three and a half murders’ by Salil Desai and ‘The Girl in Room 105’ by Chetan Bhagat, both of which I wouldn’t rate very highly. As someone who has had a poor experience with thriller books, I would definitely rate ‘The Silent Patient’  a solid 5 out of 5. I finished the book within 3 days. The story, plot, characters—everything was on point. This was the thriller book that genuinely piqued my interest and kept me guessing. The Silent Patient might not be a ground-breaking book, but it’s definitely a fun book to read. If you’re looking for a good time, this book is perfect.
