Mateo – Mateo is a shy, introverted nerd guy. He is mostly find solace in books and his sanctuary(his home). Mateo’s father is in the hospital fighting for his life. Mateo is kind and stays out of trouble until Rufus enters his life.

Rufus – Rufus is the free-spirited punk. He has lost is whole family and his orphanage friends are his only lifeline. His circumstances made him cruel but he is deep down a good person. Then he meets Mateo and convinces him to get out of his shell and live their remaining life.

The two protagonists, Mateo and Rufus, are polar opposites, but their impending deaths connect them. Mateo is a homebody, his love for books, and video games bind him to his sanctuary- his home. Mateo is an extremely kind soul who buries birds, gives money to the needy, and even donates his sneakers. On the other hand, Rufus is the kind to beat up his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend, ride the city on a bicycle, and get involved with cops. Rufus might seem like a troublesome person, but he is also a fierce friend and a lively soul. Both of them have a traumatic past and an impending death.

Both of them get a call from deathcast on the same day, informing them about their impending deaths. They only have 24 hours left. Mateo and Rufus connect through an app, and what follows is a string of adventures. The plot continues to follow their escapades; Mateo and Rufus are able to form the bond they require, but only on the day they are to die. When the two opposites collide; Mateo is able to break through his shell, and Rufus learns kindness. As the end nears, we see the development of a beautiful bond between them and their tragic ending as well. They were finally able to find happiness, but it doesn’t last long, and they eventually die.

We fail to realize it up until the point of our doom. All in all, after finishing the book, I had a full think-it-out session on topics that were too sour to think of. It’s filled with heartache and sweet devastation, and it might even force you to drop a tear or two.
